Former Phoenix Mayor Terry Goddard keeps a photo of the Hohokam canal system as it was in 1925 on his wall, or what he refers to as the “fortuitous combination” of rich soil and water from the Salt River that put Phoenix on the map.
Goddard holds on to it to remember how far the city has come, just as leaders past and present did on the steps of City Hall on Wednesday for Phoenix’s 140th birthday.
